Swegon footprint provides customers with crucial insights into climate system choices
To help property developers and owners make more sustainable decisions, we at Knowit Experience, together with Swegon, have developed Swegon footprint – a CO2 and energy calculator that provides customers with insights into how their indoor climate system choices impact both the environment and the economy.

BACKGROUND
The hidden climate footprint of the construction and real estate sector
The construction and real estate sector accounts for over 20 percent of Sweden's total carbon dioxide emissions, and Swedish buildings account for approximately 40 percent of Sweden's energy consumption, of which 73 percent is energy for heating (Boverket and Naturvårdsverket). Many innovative solutions are being developed within the industry to streamline production and simultaneously reduce these figures.
At Swegon, comprehensive indoor climate solutions are offered, which stand out in an industry where many invest separately in cooling, heating, and ventilation without seeing the full potential of an integrated solution. To make it easier to understand and calculate the climate and cost benefits, a cross-functional initiative was launched at Swegon. They had previously used an internal Excel file for calculations, based on a well-established EU standard, but saw the need for a more accessible and user-friendly tool that customers could also use.
With Swegon footprint, customers now get a quick estimate of how their choices affect carbon dioxide emissions and operating costs, as well as the savings they can make by choosing the right solution.
CHALLENGE
From complex calculations to insightful decisions
Choosing the right building technical solutions is a complex process where many factors influence the outcome – building type, energy source, square meter size, and much more. Previously, there was no easily accessible tool that could help Swegon's customers get a clear overview of how their choices affect both energy consumption and climate impact.
Another challenge was to raise awareness that Swegon can deliver complete solutions for heating, cooling, ventilation, and smart control functions that optimize the operation of the property. Many customers see these installations as separate investments and are not aware of the benefits of choosing a comprehensive solution.
Knowit Experience helped us transform an Excel sheet into an intuitive, stylish, and user-friendly platform where our customers can easily estimate potential savings in energy, CO2, and operating costs.

SOLUTION
From Excel to a powerful digital platform
Based on Swegon's existing calculation model in Excel, we were able to translate all calculations into code and store the necessary parameters in their content management system, Optimizely. With a rough sketch from Swegon as a starting point, our designers developed the UX and design for what is now Swegon footprint. We developed the tool as an advanced calculator based on a complex calculation model that takes several parameters into account – such as building type, energy use, and choice of heating and cooling systems. The result provides a clear overview of energy savings, reduced CO2 emissions, and operating costs.
Thanks to Swegon footprint, customers can easily input their data and receive immediate feedback on how their choices affect both the climate and costs. The results can be saved and used in further dialogue with Swegon, creating a more value-driven sales process.
RESULT
An important piece in driving sustainable business decisions
Footprint was recently launched in Sweden and is expected to become an important part of Swegon's work in driving sustainable business decisions within the construction and real estate industry. In the long term, an international rollout of the tool is planned to support more markets in the transition to energy-efficient solutions.
How the solution contributes to Agenda 2030
Goal 9: Sustainable industry, innovation, and infrastructure – Swegon footprint promotes innovation and contributes to building sustainable infrastructure within the construction and real estate sector.
Goal 12: Sustainable consumption and production – The tool helps customers make more sustainable decisions by providing insight into how their choices affect both the environment and the economy, promoting sustainable consumption and production.
